Oriental, NC – Sept. 9, 2017
The Southern Region Area 7 Commodore’s Cup regatta was held on the Neuse River near Pamilco Sound off the coast of North Carolina. Seven teams from five ships launched their FJs under partly cloudy skies with gusty NE winds at 12-18 knots and a moderate chop on the river. After more than one boat capsized on the way to the course, the committee decided to move the location further inland and use the morning for practice races. In the afternoon seven races were successfully completed by six teams. One team reluctantly but wisely withdrew from the competition following an injury.
Timothy B and his brother Julian from Ship 16 took first place. Erica and Nathan, Ship 1810 earned second place. Their total scores qualified both teams to participate in the Koch International Sea Scout Cup regatta in 2018. The third place team, Gavin and Melody, captured a spot on the alternates list for the Koch Cup.
The event organization and logistical support was provided by Ship 244 of Cary, NC. Race day breakfast and lunch was prepared for all by the marvelous volunteer crew of scouters and parents who were no longer strangers after assembling 88 bag lunch sandwiches in 40 minutes!
Special thanks to Jim Edwards of the Bow To Stern Boating Center for providing the committee and safety boats, the FJs with new sails, for serving as Race Officer and for sharing your expertise and love of sailing with the Sea Scouts of Southern Region Area 7.
